Tesla design and produce a range of planar gradients for application in OEM High Field Open Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MR) systems where patients are imaged between two large plate magnets in an area that can be three times larger than in cylindrical systems.

HFO MR or Open MRI systems are widely used in health care, since they can accommodate large patients and those who would otherwise experience claustrophobic reactions in a more comfortable and relaxed environment.

There is some interest in using open systems for intra-operative and image-guided interventions.  Clinical studies such as cinematic joint studies are potentially possible and imaging of patients with implants may result in better imaging results.
